Less than $20,000 for a 64 foot yacht that can be sailed around the world...it isn't some fancy boat either but was a former working vessel.

Nice vessel. But boats are just a big hole in the water that you throw money into. Ask me how I know.

If I wanted a SHTF boat, I'd buy an ex-lifeboat or ex-coastguard boat -they are intended to take to the sea when other boats cannot, are self-righting if they capsize, and are watertight once you "batten down the haches"!
Not to mention they have first aid sections etc. on board, as well as everything the crew may need if something should go horribly wrong.

I imagine that right now it is not to hard to find a deal on a boat.

i get seasick real easy. last time i went sailing in about a 4 foot open ocean swell in San Diego i spent the entire sail vomiting. there's something oddly intimate about vomiting with a group of people for an afternoon.

BUT ANYWAY - if you could dry-dock it and get it zoned - for $20K - especially if you live in a flood prone area - could have possibilities !

I hope she hasn't been dry docked very long.

Dry docking a wooden hulled boat for any length of time can be a very bad idea.

30 years old, could need a lot of work, not to mention upkeep.

What would it really entail? To have such a boat in the water?

Good working boat, not sure about as a liveaboard, would have to examine it more closely.

Note it is fiberglass over mahogany plywood, needs to be carefully inspected. Also it is not as good looking as other boats, plus, most marinas charge by the foot, so it is expensive to dock.

Glass over can a be a pita and conversions are usually less than optimal.

Mooring would be the way to go.

If the SHTF Newport harbor and many others would be a good place to go "shopping".

All you need is a skiff and a crowbar - lol.

It would be a good boat IF you know what you are doing.
